Huckabee misses the point entirely

Of course Huckabee couldn’t have known; that’s not the point:

‘If I could have known nine years ago that this guy was capable of something of this magnitude, obviously I would have never granted a commutation. It’s sickening,’ Huckabee said on Fox News Channel’s ‘The O’Reilly Factor.’

I thought the pardon power was granted not to allow executives to impose their misguided sense of compassion on the citizens upon whom they unleash criminals, but as a check against the legislature and judiciary who could levy charges against a governor’s or or the president’s political cronies or otherwise screw around with the justice system to their own political advantage and/or the executive’s political disadvantage.

The point isn’t that Huckabee couldn’t have known. It should be that he abused his power of the pardon.

Or maybe I’m wrong about the origin of the pardon power and someone can tell me why it’s right and good for the republic that governors and presidents commute sentences and pardon individuals simply because the right people lobby them to do so.
